I can’t tell you how much of a pleasure it was to meet you. I grew up loving average pizza in Detroit, but I didn’t get obsessed with it until I discovered the spiritual side — the stories behind the pizzaioli, the shops themselves, and the community that grows around the pies. Then, as I started writing about pizza and getting deeper into the world, I was exposed to the sometimes ugly business side, and part of that meaning I had found in it was shorn away, along with some of the joy. Last year I was able to have dinner with Chris Bianco and his words restored some of that deep feeling about pizza I had lost. Learning your story, hearing you talk about pizza, and eating some of that amazing pie you made restored the rest. It was honestly one of the best, most inspiring conversations I’ve ever been a part of. I hope to continue it one day. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do to help with the Pizza Mecca project or anything else. And I’ll hopefully see you later this year in Chicago for pizza (if not in Phoenix!).

PS Unfortunately my real camera was out of batteries on day two so we have to settle for iphone pictures. Fortunately, that particular pizza doesn’t have the ability to look bad.
